Accra: Nana Abena Kwantwiwaa I, Krontihemaa of Assin Darmang, has made a significant contribution to education by donating a variety of teaching and learning materials to numerous basic schools in the Assin South District.
According to Ghana News Agency, this initiative is part of the 'My First Day at School - Back to School' program, which aims to motivate pupils to return to classrooms and enhance the quality of education. The donation, which included exercise books, pencils, chalk, and supplementary reading books, reached several schools, including Nsuaem SDA School, Darmang Catholic School, Living God Preparatory School, Methodist Primary School, and Ngresi/Nkran Primary and Junior High Schools.
During the presentation, Nana Abena Kwantwiwaa I explained that the 'My First Day at School' initiative is designed to provide pupils with a positive introduction to the school environment. It focuses on acquainting them with teachers and classmates, familiarizing them with classroom routines, and fostering curiosity, social connections, and a strong emotional foundation for future learning. She emphasized the importance of creating excitement around the reopening of schools and urged parents and stakeholders to prioritize the education and welfare of children.
She advised the pupils to take their studies seriously, respect their teachers, and maintain discipline to achieve their academic goals. She also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure their children attend school promptly and regularly.
Mr. Isaac Opoku Nkum, Assin South District Director of Education, accompanied the Krontihemaa during the visits and praised the gesture as a timely support to the efforts of the Ghana Education Service. However, he expressed concern about some parents keeping their children away from school at the start of the term, which can be discouraging to teachers and impact both academic progress and teacher morale. He called for better cooperation between parents, teachers, and education authorities to ensure regular attendance and improve learning outcomes.
A teacher at Darmang Catholic School expressed appreciation for Nana Abena Kwantwiwaa's donation, believing the 'My First Day at School' initiative will motivate pupils to return and quickly adapt to classroom routines, thereby enhancing learning outcomes. A student also shared gratitude for the books and supplies, stating they make returning to school exciting, aid in learning, and serve as a reminder to respect teachers and work diligently.
