Carlos Queiroz Tasked with Securing AFCON 2027 Qualification for Ghana

Accra: The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has officially disclosed that the primary objective for Carlos Queiroz, following his reappointment, is to lead the Black Stars to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). According to Ghana Web, extensive discussions were held between the GFA leadership and the Portuguese coach about the targets and necessary steps to enhance the team's performance. Queiroz's main mandate is to ensure the team's qualification for the 2027 AFCON, thereby reviving hope and pride among supporters. In an interview with Asempa FM, Asante Twum highlighted the importance of this goal, noting the team cannot afford another absence from the AFCON tournament following the disappointment of the previous edition. "We had discussions before we concluded extending Carlos Queiroz's contract, but the task is to guide the Black Stars back to the AFCON next year. We were not there last year, and we cannot afford to miss out this time ar ound," Asante Twum stated. The decision to extend Queiroz's contract follows his role in guiding the Black Stars to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the upcoming AFCON qualifiers, Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, and Somalia. Ghana's qualifying campaign will commence with an away match against Côte d'Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24, 2026, followed by a home match against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27, 2026.
