Accra: The Accra Turf Club has staged a demonstration in Accra to demand government intervention following the demolition of the Accra Race Course at Borteyman. The protesters, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, marched through the Independence Square and El-Wak before proceeding to the Jubilee House, where they presented a petition demanding action over the destruction of the facility.
According to Ghana Web, the demonstration follows the demolition on August 22, 2026, when the Club reported that armed men, accompanied by police officers and heavy-duty machinery, entered the racecourse and pulled down several structures. The Club stated that about 100 horse stables, offices, and other facilities were destroyed, while horses were allegedly forcibly removed and jockeys ejected from their accommodation.
At the Jubilee House, presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah welcomed the protesters and assured them that President John Dramani Mahama was prepared to address their concerns. 'The president is always willing to ensure that the right thing is done. I believe that horse racing should be maintained, retained, and preserved. So His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is going to get this petition, and he is going to get to the bottom of it,' she said.
A representative of the Lands Commission was also present to receive the petition on behalf of the Commission. 'On behalf of the Lands Commission, I receive this petition. We will study it and take the appropriate decisions,' the representative stated.
The Turf Club is demanding the restoration of its access to the Borteyman racecourse, the removal of alleged encroachers, and a full investigation into the demolition.
