Kumasi: The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen's Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed plans to hold a night vigil in honour of the party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi.
According to Ghana Web, the vigil is scheduled for August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office in Asokwa, a day ahead of the party's Ashanti Regional elections. The caucus emphasized that the event aims to show solidarity with Chairman Wontumi following his recent conviction and imprisonment related to an illegal mining case, which they have labeled as an injustice.
The statement highlighted that the vigil would also celebrate what the caucus described as Chairman Wontumi's leadership during his tenure as the Ashanti Regional Chairman. "The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen's Caucus announces a night vigil on August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office, Asokwa, on the eve of the Ashanti Regional elections, in honour of Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi)," the statement read.
The caucus stressed that this gathering intends to convey 'a clear signal, locally and internationally, that we will not stay silent.' Constituency executives, party members, and well-wishers from across the region have been invited to join the event.
In their announcement, the organisers assured the public that the vigil would be conducted peacefully and in a disciplined manner. This event follows the Accra High Court's decision to sentence Chairman Wontumi to 20 years' imprisonment due to his conviction in an illegal mining case associated with Akonta Mining Company Limited's concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
