Accra: Catholic Priest, Reverend Father Emmanuel Effah Adjei, has offered a candid glimpse into the financial realities of priesthood, revealing that he receives a monthly allowance of GHS500. He stressed that the priesthood is a vocation rooted in sacrifice, not financial gain.
According to Ghana Web, Father Effah Adjei explained that priests do not earn salaries but are given modest allowances to cover personal needs. He noted that the Church's resources are directed primarily toward supporting the congregation, while priests are expected to live simply. "Our monthly allowance is something to just keep you going because you do not have a wife or children. We use the Church's resources to help the people in the Church," he said.
Father Effah Adjei recalled that as a newly ordained priest, he initially received a daily allowance of GHS35, which was later increased to GHS50. He emphasised that anyone entering the priesthood with expectations of wealth has chosen the wrong path. "If you are all about money, you cannot become a priest. If you take care of the work of God, God will also take care of you," he stated.
He underscored that Roman Catholic priests do not receive salaries, describing their work as a sacrificial calling dedicated to serving God and humanity. Addressing public perceptions about wealthy pastors, he noted that expensive cars or gifts often come from congregants rather than personal income.
