Gomoa central: The Former Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Rachel Florence Appoh, has criticized the current MP for the Constituency, Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A Plus, for his insulting remarks toward victims of recent floods in the area.
According to Ghana Web, Appoh's comments come in the wake of severe flooding on June 28 and 29, 2026, which left many residents in Gomoa Central and nearby communities displaced, with their homes and properties submerged. A viral video showed a flood victim seeking support from A Plus, whose response, reportedly laced with inappropriate language, has drawn significant public backlash.
Appoh, who also served as Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, emphasized that leaders are expected to offer empathy and support during national disasters, not confrontational responses. She highlighted the role of Members of Parliament in providing assistance to their constituents, especially in times of crisis.
She criticized A Plus's suggestion that constituents should discard their voter ID cards if they choose not to support him, calling it an insult and urging the President to intervene. Appoh underscored the importance of ethical standards and decorum in public communications by parliamentarians, pointing out the existence of a Code of Conduct in Parliament that governs lawmakers' behavior.
Appoh advised A Plus to reconsider his approach, emphasizing that the role of an MP should be characterized by respect and accountability. She argued that leadership extends beyond infrastructure development to include compassion and responsiveness to the needs of the people, urging public officials to uphold these values when engaging with citizens, especially those in distress.
