Accra: The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has issued a stern demand for an apology from Linda Ahenkora, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akyemansa District in the Eastern Region. The council accuses her of deliberate interference in chieftaincy matters by allegedly supporting the secessionist Etweresohene, Ofosu Kwabi, and unlawfully elevating him to a recognized status within the traditional council.
According to Ghana Web, the traditional council has instructed Linda Ahenkora to retract a letter dated 7 July 2026, which purportedly conferred paramountcy status on the Etweresohene. The demand for retraction and apology was formalized in a letter dated 12 August 2026, signed by the State Secretary, DM Ofori-Atta. The council warned that failure to comply would result in escalating the issue to the appropriate authorities.
The council clarified that it has not appointed anyone as Regent for the Etwereso Stool. DM Ofori-Atta stated that any previous mention of a Regent was an inadvertent mistake, which was corrected after being addressed at a State Council meeting. The council emphasized its adherence to lawful customary procedures for chieftaincy matters.
DM Ofori-Atta reiterated that the council's stance on the Etweresohene's status remains unchanged, as previously communicated in public correspondences. The council criticized the DCE's actions, suggesting she should have sought clarification from the Ofori Panin Fie before proceeding.
The council highlighted that Article 270(2) of the 1992 Constitution prohibits any authority, including Parliament, from enacting laws that confer or withdraw recognition from a chief. It further noted that the administration, registration, and recognition of chiefs are responsibilities of constitutionally designated chieftaincy institutions, not MMDCEs.
Nananoom underscored that the Etwereso Stool is a sub-stool of the Benkum Division of the Ofori Panin Stool. The Okyenhene remains committed to peaceful resolutions and will uphold responsibilities regarding the Etwereso matter.
