Asikuma odoben brakwa: The Asikuma Odoben Brakwa (AOB) District Assembly has encountered a significant hurdle as it failed to elect a Presiding Member after four intense rounds of voting spread across two separate sittings. This impasse leaves the Assembly without a guiding leader to oversee its deliberations and decision-making processes.
According to Ghana Web, the election was a contest between Nana Tobea Danquah II, the Apagyahene of the Breman Asikuma Traditional Council and a government appointee, and Dr Alexander Koomson, the Assembly Member for Breman Benin South Electoral Area. Despite multiple voting sessions, neither candidate could secure the necessary votes to assume the role of Presiding Member.
In the initial sitting on February 27, 2026, Nana Tobea Danquah II garnered 29 votes against Dr Koomson's 18. A subsequent round on the same day saw a slight increase for Danquah II with 30 votes, whereas Dr Koomson received 17. Despite these leads, Danquah II did not meet the required two-thirds majority of the Assembly's 49 members, which equates to 33 votes, to be declared the Presiding Member.
The Assembly reconvened for a second sitting on March 13, 2026, as mandated by local governance laws, which stipulate another attempt within ten days if the initial voting does not yield a winner. However, the second sitting mirrored the first, with Danquah II obtaining 30 votes in both rounds, while Dr Koomson maintained 17 votes, leaving both candidates short of the 33-vote requirement.
Dr Alexander Koomson, aiming for re-election after a prior tenure as Presiding Member, and Nana Tobea Danquah II now face the necessity to step aside, opening the floor for new nominations and a fresh election process. This development necessitates restarting the election process, delaying the full operational capabilities of the Assembly as it awaits a new Presiding Member to guide its legislative and oversight functions.
