Accra: Anna Wasserfall, the Country Representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office, has emphasized the transformative potential of young political leaders in Ghana by advocating for integrity, cross-party collaboration, and responsible leadership. She stated that hundreds of young individuals making sound leadership decisions daily could significantly enhance Ghana's democratic institutions.
According to Ghana Web, Wasserfall spoke at the closing ceremony of the European Union Women and Youth Democratic Engagement (WYDE) Political Parties Project in Accra on August 6, 2026. She underscored that genuine change comes from young leaders who embody honesty, accountability, and service in their political careers and daily lives.
She highlighted that if numerous committed young leaders make positive decisions regularly, it would lead to stronger institutions, increased trust, and more resilient democracies. The six-month leadership initiative aimed to equip young politicians with skills in governance, communication, and public leadership.
Wasserfall pointed out that the program's impact would be evident not through completed training sessions but through the participants' influence in their communities and political environments. She stressed that effective leadership is about responsibility, not authority, and that democratic institutions thrive when leaders display honesty, resilience, and accountability.
She encouraged participants to utilize the knowledge, networks, and leadership skills gained from the program to boost youth participation in governance and fortify democratic institutions. Jonas Claes, Deputy Head of Delegation and Head of the Political Section at the European Union Delegation to Ghana, reiterated the European Union's dedication to supporting youth involvement as part of its broader democratic governance partnership with Ghana.
Claes emphasized the importance of investing in young leaders to foster inclusive political participation and strengthen democratic institutions. He assured that the European Union would continue its youth engagement efforts in Ghana for years to come.
Laurenz Van Ginneken, Project Manager at the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP), encouraged participants to maintain cross-party relationships built during the program and prioritize national development over partisan interests. He stated, "Democracy is a clash of ideas, not a clash of people."
The WYDE Political Parties Project, implemented by the KAS Ghana Office in collaboration with the European Union and ENoP, aimed to prepare emerging political leaders for public office through training, mentorship, and dialogue on democratic governance, leadership, and political communication. The project is part of the European Union's Women and Youth Democratic Engagement programme, which seeks to increase the participation of young people and women in democratic processes by strengthening leadership capacity, promoting inclusive political dialogue, and encouraging cooperation across political parties.
