Akosombo: The second edition of the Ampem EduCamp, an educational initiative led by Asuogyaman MP Thomas Nyarko Ampem, concluded with 412 Junior High School (JHS) students encouraged to apply the lessons learned over the two-week program to achieve academic excellence.
According to Ghana Web, the 2026 edition of the camp, which took place from August 2 to August 16, gathered students from 77 JHS across the Asuogyaman District. The program offered academic instruction, mentorship, competitions, practical learning, and other developmental activities. The closing ceremony was held at the Wesley Methodist Chapel in Akosombo on Friday, August 14, 2026, and saw the attendance of traditional leaders, education officials, teachers, parents, government officials, and other stakeholders.
During the ceremony, nine students were recognized for their outstanding performance in Mathematics, Science, and English, with Victoria Akubah Akesseh being named the overall best student. Each participating student received textbooks and exercise books in Mathematics, Science, and English.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey and Minister for Transport Joseph Nikpe were among the notable attendees. The camp focused on intensive instruction in core subjects while also aiming to develop students' confidence, critical thinking, and practical skills through various activities, including a Spelling Bee, science and mathematics quizzes, debates, games, creative arts, and entertainment. Students also learned about self-esteem, exam preparation, role modeling, self-awareness, drug abuse, financial literacy, and Ghanaian history. A practical learning component included a visit to the Akosombo Dam to understand hydroelectric power generation, along with free health insurance registration and renewal services.
MP Thomas Nyarko Ampem shared that the initiative was partly inspired by his childhood experience at a youth camp in Akosombo, which broadened his perspective beyond his immediate community. Ampem expressed satisfaction with the program's growth, which now includes students from 77 schools. He expressed gratitude to teachers, the Asuogyaman District Education Directorate, and sponsors like the Tang Foundation for their support. Ampem further pledged continued support for students excelling in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as promised in the 2025 edition. He also announced plans for the 2027 edition, urging current JHS students to strive for inclusion in the upcoming camp.
Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe advised students to remain disciplined and avoid activities that could jeopardize their future, while Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey praised Ampem for the program's continuity. Akwamumanhene Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, represented by Nana Akonnor Bekai Ababio V, reminded participants that the true measure of success lies in applying their newly gained knowledge and experiences to foster lasting habits of excellence. He advocated for the institutionalization of the program, highlighting the potential for the EduCamp to become a lasting institution.
