Pupils have been tasked with collecting money from relatives, friends, and the public, with the promise of free school fees for the child who raises the most.
According to Ghana Web, the initiative, known as the 'Icon Contest,' involves pupils using contribution cards to gather donations. The cards, which were reviewed by The Chronicle, provide spaces for donors to write their names, specify donation amounts, and sign. The contest winner is promised free school fees for the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.
Parents and community members have expressed concern, stating that the contest encourages children to become collectors, with success based on fundraising rather than academic performance or talent. Some parents have noted that this places children from wealthier families at an advantage over those from less affluent backgrounds.
The situation raises questions about the values being taught at the school, as the emphasis shifts from classroom excellence to public solicitation. In defense of the initiative, Headmaster Waisu Issaka stated in an interview with The Chronicle that participation is voluntary and aimed at helping students with financial difficulties. He argued that the contest offers an opportunity for these pupils to receive support.
