Alavanyo: The Alavanyo Traditional Queens, led by Mamaga Ametor Hoebuadzu II, Paramount Queen of the area, have honoured 30 women from the region to commemorate the 2026 Mothers' Day celebration. The event recognized the contributions of these women to national development, particularly in the areas of community promotion, unity, and peace.
According to Ghana News Agency, the honourees were selected from various divisions within and beyond the Alavanyo area. The celebration was part of a three-day program aimed at empowering women, especially mothers, to contribute to community development through unity and peace. Mamaga Ametor expressed the intention to make this an annual event, rotating among the divisions to reach more women.
The program was designed to educate women about their rights, financial management, and their role as peacebuilders. Mamaga Ametor emphasized the importance of women understanding their rights and using their voices to impact future generations positively.
Reverend Father Anthony Akpalu, the Parish Priest of St Augustine Catholic Church in Alavanyo, highlighted the significant roles women play in national development. He encouraged men to continue contributing to societal welfare, even if they sometimes feel underrecognized.
Madam Thywill Eyra Kpe, the Volta Regional Director of Gender, urged women to pursue leadership roles and participate in decision-making processes. She pointed out that although women constitute over 52% of the Volta Region's population, their involvement in local decision-making remains low. Madam Kpe encouraged women to leverage government policies, such as the Affirmative Action Act, and initiatives like the Women Development Bank to enhance their leadership capabilities.
She also mentioned various government programs aimed at supporting women economically and preventing violence. These include helplines for reporting abuse, which women are encouraged to use. Madam Kpe emphasized the role of women as peace promoters and urged them to be proactive in peacekeeping initiatives.
Overall, the Mothers' Day celebration in Alavanyo served as a platform to empower women, promote peace, and encourage greater participation in leadership and community development.
