Akosombo Dam: Two Generating Units Back in Operation – Energy Minister

Accra: The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that two generating units at the Akosombo Dam have been restored, following recent disruptions to the power supply.

According to Ghana Web, this development comes after a recent fire incident at the Akosombo Substation, which disrupted power evacuation and generation. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Dr. Jinapor stated that engineers have made progress in bringing the units back into operation after emergency technical works. He confirmed that the first generating unit was restored the previous day and the second unit was synchronized as he addressed the gathering.

The minister emphasized that work is actively ongoing to bring the third and remaining units back into operation as quickly and safely as possible. The situation has significantly affected power supply across Ghana due to challenges at the Akosombo Dam, the country's largest electricity source.

Dr. Jinapor described the incident as an unprecedented disaster that has led to severe supply challenges not seen in recent times. He commended the engineers and technical teams for their swift actions in restoring operations at the facility, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism under extremely difficult conditions.

The restoration of these units is expected to immediately alleviate the supply deficit, which has caused widespread outages across the Ashanti, Central, and Tema regions over the past 48 hours.
