Accra: Lecturer Kwame Asah-Asante has warned that Ghana risks a major disaster if urgent attention is not given to dam management and flood control systems. Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, he said the proposed Buipe Dam remains critical to protecting the Akosombo Dam and reducing the danger of destructive spillages.
According to Ghana Web, engineers have long explained that the Buipe Dam would help contain excess water from upstream spillages before it reaches Akosombo. Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that the situation is more serious than many people realize. He cautioned that if the Akosombo Dam were to fail, it could inundate over 70% of the land in Accra, posing a severe threat to the city.
Dr. Asah-Asante stressed the importance of not treating the issue lightly due to its potentially catastrophic consequences. Beyond flood control, he noted that the Buipe Dam could also support irrigation and improve water management across the country, providing multiple benefits beyond averting disaster.
