Akatsi South Moves to Mitigate Flooding with Proposed Drainage Construction

Akatsi: The Executive Committee (EXECO) of the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly has recommended the construction of drains in flood-prone areas within the municipality ahead of the major rainy season. The initiative is part of efforts to prevent potential disasters associated with flooding.

According to Ghana News Agency, the recommendation was included in the Executive Committee Report presented by Mr. Daniel Dagba, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), during the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the second Assembly. The report emphasized the urgency of implementing preventive measures as the municipality approaches the peak of the rainy season, highlighting the necessity of constructing drains to avert flooding disasters.

One of the key proposals is the construction of drains along the stretch from Esianyokope Junction to El-Shaddai, which has been identified as a particularly flood-prone area. The Committee believes that improving water flow in this area will significantly reduce the risk of flooding, thereby safeguarding lives and property during heavy rains.

In addition to drainage construction, EXECO has proposed the procurement of motorbikes for the Alipedo and Gui Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds. This recommendation aims to address the mobility challenges faced by the Ghana Health Service in delivering healthcare services to rural communities.

The report also suggested the construction of a permanent shelter for vulnerable individuals to enhance the operations of the Social Welfare Department. Other recommendations include acquiring a chainsaw and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the Ghana National Fire Service to improve emergency response capabilities and facilitate the removal of high-risk trees in communities and market centers.

Regarding revenue mobilization, the Committee advised the regularization of billboard permits and the establishment of road checkpoints at Avenorpeme and around the Roman Catholic Church area. Additionally, concerns about the underperformance of substructures led to the proposal of forming a nine-member ad hoc committee to evaluate their challenges and propose effective solutions.
