Tamale: Alhaji Yussif Fuseini Amuda, the Tamale Metropolitan Director of Agriculture in-charge of Crops, has urged households nationwide to engage in backyard farming. This initiative aims to enhance food security and lessen the reliance on external food resources.
According to Ghana News Agency, Alhaji Amuda emphasized that each household should ensure that at least one ingredient in their meals originates from their backyard. He highlighted that cultivating basic crops like tomatoes and peppers does not demand much space or resources, suggesting the use of containers or gallons filled with soil for growing vegetables.
Speaking during a town hall meeting on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) localisation and stakeholder engagement in Tamale, Alhaji Amuda discussed the pivotal role of agriculture in human existence and national progress. He stated that no nation has developed without prioritising agriculture, underscoring its importance as the foundation of human survival.
He reiterated the centrality of agriculture-related goals within the SDGs, specifically the aim to eradicate hunger, noting that food security impacts all facets of human life. Alhaji Amuda called on Ghanaians to shift their perspectives on agriculture and leverage available resources to bolster food production at both household and community levels.
Moreover, he appealed to the government, institutions, and households to demonstrate renewed dedication to promoting agriculture. This approach is seen as a pathway to achieving food security, economic growth, and sustainable development.
