Aful nkwanta: Victims of the fire at Aful Nkwanta in the Oforikrom Municipality are urging the government to assist in rebuilding their homes and businesses. The fire, which occurred on a Saturday evening, destroyed over 300 wooden structures, displacing approximately 700 individuals, including head potters and scrap dealers.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana National Fire Service responded to a distress call around 5 pm on January 17, 2026. However, fire fighters faced challenges accessing the area, which delayed efforts to control the blaze, leading to significant property damage. Additionally, a mob obstructed the fire officers' entry, complicating the situation and allowing the fire to spread more rapidly.
This incident is not isolated, as the area has a history of frequent fire outbreaks, with significant incidents recorded in 2016, 2020, and once again this year. These fires have repeatedly displaced residents and caused property losses worth millions of cedis, underscoring the need for better safety measures and increased community awareness about fire hazards.
Mr. Ebenezer Graham, Acting Asokwa Municipal Fire Commander, confirmed the incident and stated that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. He promised that comprehensive reports would be released following the investigation's completion.
