Accra: The African Forum for Muslim Councils (AFMC) has adopted significant resolutions and a clear roadmap to strengthen its institutional effectiveness ahead of its planned Extra-Ordinary General Assembly (EGA) in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to Ghana News Agency, these resolutions were adopted at the AFMC Annual Review and Planning Meeting, which took place from January 24 to 26, 2026, at the headquarters of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC). The meeting was led by His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, Chairman of AFMC and Mufti of Uganda, alongside his deputies, including Sheikh Muhammad Amir Kpakpo Addo from Ghana and Sheikh Moemedi Hasan Lentswe from Botswana.
The meeting focused on reviewing AFMC's institutional progress, challenges, and operational status. Participants deliberated on the concept paper for the Abuja EGA and reviewed reports on finance, strategic planning, and constitutional matters. Appreciation was expressed to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs for hosting and sponsoring the meeting. Official letters of gratitude are to be issued to the host councils and participating member councils.
The AFMC formally adopted the agenda, deliberations, and outcomes of the meeting. A comprehensive status report was accepted as the official performance assessment, with challenges identified to guide corrective actions. The Secretariat was tasked with developing a corrective action framework and submitting quarterly progress reports.
The meeting approved the EGA concept paper, viewing the Assembly as a strategic milestone for AFMC's governance and restructuring. An organising committee is to be formed, with the Secretariat coordinating logistics and program development with the Nigerian host council.
Financial governance and sustainability were also addressed. A Finance and Resource Mobilisation Taskforce will be established to implement funding strategies and strengthen member contributions. The current financial status report was endorsed, highlighting the need for resource mobilisation, including enforcing subscription fees by member councils.
Strategic planning reaffirmed the AFMC Strategic Plan as the guiding framework for action, with priorities to be highlighted at the Abuja EGA. The Secretariat was directed to review and align the strategic plan as necessary, translating priorities into operational plans.
Constitutional refinement was acknowledged as necessary to align with AFMC's evolving mandate. A constitutional review roadmap is to be developed, with proposed amendments circulated to member councils before the Abuja EGA for consultation and final adoption.
The meeting resolved to enhance AFMC's communication and stakeholder engagement through a comprehensive strategy. The Secretariat was tasked with coordinating all resolutions, supported by an implementation matrix, timelines, and regular virtual meetings leading up to the Abuja EGA.
The opening of the first AFMC Regional Coordinating Office in South Africa was approved to serve the Southern African Development Community region. Immediate action points include circulating the meeting report, activating Abuja EGA committees, initiating fundraising, and launching the SADC regional office within 30 days.
