Afenyo-Markin Intends to Stay in Parliament if NPP Returns to Power

Accra:Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has expressed his desire to remain in Parliament should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regain power in 2029.

According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin's experience as a former Majority Leader has shaped his understanding of the importance of allowing the minority to voice concerns and contribute to legislative processes. During a visit to the Christian Council on October 5, 2026, he stated his intention to continue serving in Parliament to ensure this balance is maintained.

He shared instances from his tenure as Majority Leader when he accommodated the then Minority's concerns. Afenyo-Markin recalled adjusting the vetting process for Supreme Court nominees after the Minority requested a longer notice period. This example highlighted his willingness to collaborate with opposition members.

Afenyo-Markin noted that this collaborative approach was not reciprocated when the political dynamics shifted. He observed that the new majority did not extend the same courtesy, proceeding with vetting processes without adequate notice, which contradicted their previous stance.

He emphasized that his dual perspective from serving both as a Majority and Minority Leader would guide his efforts to engage constructively with the minority if the NPP returns to power. He believes this experience will allow him to effectively listen and respond to minority concerns in the future.
