Kumasi: Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed suggestions that he could be considered as a running mate to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the next general elections. Speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio, Afenyo-Markin emphasized his lack of interest in the position and urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from speculating about potential running mate candidates.
According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns that discussions surrounding the selection of a running mate were creating unnecessary competition within the party and should be brought to an end. He stated, "Let's stop the needless competitions on the running mate issue. Please count me out. I beg you, let's stop it. There are senior members in the party. NAPO was the man's running mate."
The Effutu MP underscored his lack of personal ambition for the role, maintaining that more senior figures within the NPP could be considered for the position. He further remarked, "Please don't lead me into that temptation. I'm not one of those overly ambitious people. I'm very serious about this. I don't know why you said that, but there are senior members in the party."
Afenyo-Markin reiterated his commitment to supporting Dr Bawumia's presidential bid rather than seeking a higher position within the party's campaign structure. "I won't want this to bring any enmity. Let me serve where I'm serving to help the man become president," he stated.
His remarks come amid increasing debate within the NPP over who could be selected as Dr Bawumia's running mate as the party prepares for the next election cycle. Minority Leader, Hon. Afenyo Markin, has clarified that he has no intention of becoming Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's running mate in the upcoming elections.
