Accra: The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for distributing inadequate relief items, specifically baked beans and noodles, to victims of the recent floods. Afenyo-Markin argued that the affected individuals require more substantial aid to address their immediate and long-term needs.
According to Ghana Web, during a session on July 7, 2026, Afenyo-Markin expressed his dissatisfaction on the floor of Parliament, highlighting that despite the government's reported disbursement of funds to NADMO for flood relief, the distributed items were insufficient. He emphasized that the victims, who have lost homes and businesses, need essential food supplies like rice, maize, and cooking oil to rebuild their lives, rather than packaged food.
Afenyo-Markin pointed out the necessity for the government to provide more meaningful assistance, including staples and support to restore livelihoods. He also raised concerns about the procurement process for the relief items, questioning how the baked beans were acquired and stressing the need for more appropriate materials such as blankets and mattresses for those displaced by the floods.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, reported that the recent floods across Ghana resulted in 29 fatalities, with six individuals still missing. Addressing Parliament's Public Assurance Committee, Muntaka detailed that the deaths occurred in separate incidents within the Greater Accra, Central, and Volta regions. He noted that the Central Region experienced one of the most severe flood disasters a week before the June 29, 2026, floods in Accra, leading to 18 deaths and the destruction of numerous homes.
