The Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency Communications Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has responded to remarks made by the Chief of Obengkrom, Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng, regarding cocoa prices and accusations against their Member of Parliament (MP), Felix Kwakye Ofosu. The chief had criticized President John Dramani Mahama for his handling of cocoa prices and alleged that Kwakye Ofosu had become unresponsive since assuming office as an MP.
According to Ghana Web, the Constituency Communications Officer, Akwesi Attakorah Asante, addressed the media, countering the chief's claims and accusing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority MPs of misleading cocoa farmers during their recent visit to the area. Asante specifically pointed out that Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, had misled farmers by stating that the Mahama administration cheated cocoa farmers.
Asante defended the government's actions, explaining that the reduction in coc oa prices was a global phenomenon, not unique to Ghana. He emphasized that the government's approach was to ensure revenue generation through the sale of cocoa beans. Furthermore, Asante criticized the previous NPP administration for providing cocoa farmers with a smaller share of the profits compared to the current arrangement under the NDC, where farmers receive 70% of the proceeds.
The NDC representative also accused the NPP government of discontinuing benefits that had previously supported cocoa farmers, including free cocoa fertilizers and bonuses, which were halted after the NPP assumed office in 2016.
In response to allegations by Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng that Felix Kwakye Ofosu ignored his messages, Asante challenged the chief to publicly present evidence of such communications. He accused the chief of using the Minority's visit to advance a political agenda rather than addressing the welfare of his community.
Asante highlighted the developmental p rojects initiated by Felix Kwakye Ofosu in the constituency, including donations to schools and road projects, asserting that these efforts surpassed those of Ntim Fordjour in his constituency.
