London: Ghanaian table tennis star, Derek Abrefa, has donated playing equipment to the national women's table tennis team competing at the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships in London. Some of the items donated include paddles, balls, shirts, shorts, and sneakers.
According to Ghana News Agency, Abrefa stated that the gesture was aimed at supporting the development of the sport in Ghana, particularly among young female athletes. "Table tennis opened doors and opportunities for me that I never imagined. I was once that kid too-passionate, but lacking resources," he said. Abrefa emphasized the importance of building legacies by uplifting others, expressing hope that the donation would help young athletes aspire to reach the Olympic stage.
The items were received by the national women's team coach, Eva Ampah, who described Abrefa as an inspiration to young athletes. "Derek is a player many of our young and upcoming athletes look up to. He's more than just a player to us-he's a role model. He continues to show that sport is not only about competing, but also about love and unity. This generous donation will go a long way to supporting the athletes back home," she said.
The ITTF World Team Championships run from April 28 to May 10, 2026. Ghana is being represented in the women's event by Eva Adom-Amankwaa, Joanita Borteye, and Emerald Bortey.
