Atebubu: The Police have arrested eight suspects, including some chiefs, in connection with the murder of the late Nana Serwaa Gyan Kuma, the queenmother of Abamba in the Amantin Traditional Area of the Bono East Region. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu disclosed this at a press briefing at Atebubu during his working visit to the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the suspects include Nana Yaw Bediako alias Nana Yaw, Abdul-Razak Ibrahim Langa alias Zack, Nana Owusu Sahkofi II, the chief of Akokoa, Emmanuel Agyeman Darko, the Abakomahene (sub-chief) of Akokoa, and Bukari Amadu, a driver. IGP Yohonu indicated that over the past year, the Ghana Police Service had been actively combating criminals and criminal networks across the country.
He explained that through sustained intelligence-led operations, with support from President John Dramani Mahama, the police had successfully dismantled several violent crime syndicates throughout the country. IGP Yohuno remarked on the success of their operations against armed robberies, narcotics, child trafficking, and murder, which had led to several arrests.
He noted that the police had also recovered multiple weapons and ammunition from these criminal gangs. At Atebubu, the IGP emphasized the continued effort to pursue criminal elements who were using the town as a base for their activities.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCoP) Osei Shaibu stated that five suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. He added that the three other suspects had been arrested earlier and were remanded in prison custody by the Techiman District Court in the region. These suspects include Michael Owusu Spermi, Rafiu Haruna, and Muphtawu Adamu.
The late queenmother, who operated the Ohema's Kitchen restaurant at Atebubu, was murdered on February 25, 2026, after returning home from work.
