Accra: Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central and entertainment personality, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has lamented what he describes as the lack of unity within Ghana’s creative arts industry, arguing that it is one of the country’s most divided sectors. Speaking on United Showbiz, A-Plus compared the entertainment industry to other professional groups, saying doctors, nurses, teachers, and other organized bodies readily unite to defend their members whenever they feel they have been treated unfairly.
According to Ghana Web, A-Plus cited a recent incident at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where health workers reportedly considered industrial action over concerns about the treatment of the hospital’s leadership, as an example of professionals standing together for a common cause. He also pointed to the LGBTQ+ community, saying its members consistently defend one another, unlike stakeholders in Ghana’s creative arts industry.
A-Plus emphasized that while different opinions are expected within the industry, attacks on the creative arts should be met with a united front because of the sector’s contribution to national development. He stated that stakeholders in the industry have a responsibility to support each other, particularly when facing criticism.
The Gomoa Central MP further disclosed his commitment to defending the creative arts, as he believes practitioners are often marginalized. He recounted an early experience in Parliament, where he felt belittled by a fellow MP’s remark, illustrating how some perceive those in the entertainment industry.
Addressing entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo, A-Plus urged industry players to put aside personal differences and advocate for the creative arts whenever possible. He highlighted the importance of defending the arts as other professional groups protect their interests.
