Accra:Former Asante Mampong Member of Parliament, Ing Francis Addai-Nimo, has disclosed allegations of being threatened by Hackman Owusu-Agyemang in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. Addai-Nimo, who has twice aspired to be the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearer, shared these claims during an interview.
According to Ghana Web, Addai-Nimo was allegedly told by Hackman Owusu-Agyemang to withdraw from the NPP presidential race or face similar treatment to what he experienced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with the implication that the same could occur under then Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
In his account, Addai-Nimo recounted that Owusu-Agyemang, who now chairs the NPP’s Council of Elders, contacted him, advising him to step down from the race. Despite the warning, Addai-Nimo chose to proceed with his candidacy to show his continued support and loyalty within the party, even though he did not benefit from government roles.
He also noted that although he participated in the NPP presidential primaries, he refrained from campaigning, as he was aware of the likely outcome of the election. Addai-Nimo interpreted the alleged threat from Hackman as potentially stemming from jealousy or a lack of confidence in his political abilities.
Ultimately, Addai-Nimo contested the NPP presidential primaries in 2023 but lost to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who was then serving as Ghana's Vice-President.
