Obuasi:A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allowing Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, to contest the Juaben Constituency Chairmanship election. Owusu described the decision as legally justified but politically damaging.
According to Ghana Web, Owusu emphasized that the presumption of innocence should prevail, meaning Abdulai should not be barred from the election based solely on allegations of sexual misconduct without a court or state body proving his guilt. He remarked that while the decision aligns with legal principles, it could have negative political consequences.
Owusu noted that the allegations against Abdulai have been widely publicized through an investigation by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, and the Ministry of Education has already interdicted Abdulai. This, he argued, could lead to perceptions of insensitivity by the NDC towards the affected individuals.
The NDC's Functional Executive Committee (FEC) defended its decision, stating it was based on fairness and natural justice, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Abdulai.
