Gender Minister Initiates Measures to Enhance Child Protection in Schools

Obuasi:The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening child protection in schools. This initiative follows reports of alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School and broader concerns about abuse in schools nationwide.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Lartey held a meeting with investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni to gain a deeper understanding of the situation and to identify appropriate interventions. The meeting allowed the journalist to provide further insights into the case, aiding the Ministry's response.

Ahead of the meeting, Dr. Lartey engaged with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to coordinate institutional responses. She emphasized the need for collaboration among institutions to ensure the protection and well-being of students and to promote justice.

The Minister outlined plans to work with GES to bolster existing policies, codes of conduct, and child protection measures in educational institutions across the country. These actions aim to address systemic gaps and prevent similar incidents, such as bullying and other abuses.

A technical representative from the Ministry will collaborate with GES to enhance child safeguarding mechanisms and ensure policies align with national protection laws. The Ministry will also support affected students and families with medical and psychosocial assistance.

To improve early reporting and response, the Ministry plans to display helpline numbers prominently on school campuses. This initiative will facilitate the reporting of abuse and threats, enabling students to seek timely assistance.

Manasseh Azure Awuni expressed his appreciation to the Minister for her proactive engagement and welcomed the opportunity to contribute information to assist the Ministry's efforts.

Dr. Lartey reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to working with the Ministry of Education, GES, the Ministry of the Interior, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to enhance child protection laws and policies and ensure safe learning environments for all children.

The public is urged to report cases of child abuse and domestic violence through the Ministry's Helpline of Hope call centre.
