Afenyo-Markin Challenges Ghanaian Media to Intensify Investigative Reporting

Accra:Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on journalists to enhance their investigative reporting efforts regarding drug trafficking concerns linked to Ghana and alleged security failures. He emphasized that the media should focus on holding the government accountable, rather than merely echoing official statements.

According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the constitutional duty of journalists to investigate issues of national interest that could potentially damage Ghana's international reputation and impact legitimate exporters. His remarks were made during the launch of the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra.

Afenyo-Markin invoked Article 162(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the media to hold the government accountable to the people. He stressed the importance of the media in investigating and demanding answers on matters affecting the country, especially when parliamentary oversight is limited.

The Minority Leader expressed concerns about the implications of cocaine trafficking allegations for Ghana's international standing and legitimate businesses. He cited research by JoyNews that suggests such allegations could lead to prolonged cargo holds, increased inspections, and higher costs for exporters, potentially affecting exports like cocoa, timber, and cashew nuts.

Afenyo-Markin urged journalists to thoroughly investigate these issues to establish the facts and not allow national matters to be overshadowed by official narratives. He accused the government of diverting public attention from drug trafficking concerns through political controversies and high-profile arrests, though this claim was political criticism rather than an established finding.

Beyond drug trafficking, Afenyo-Markin called for a media landscape that remains independent and committed to public accountability. He encouraged journalists to serve as a check on authority and urged political leaders to foster dialogue, reduce partisan tensions, and prioritize national interests over political considerations. The event underscored the critical role of journalists in promoting accountability and strengthening democratic governance in Ghana.
