Bank of Ghana to Launch Heritage Series of Cedi Notes in November 2026

Accra:The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce a new series of Ghana Cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, in November 2026. This update marks more than twenty years since the last major redesign of the currency. According to Ghana Web, the Heritage Series will feature enhanced security measures, improved durability, and modern designs that reflect Ghana's cultural heritage and identity. The banknotes are part of a broader initiative to modernize the country's currency in line with advancements in technology and currency management standards. The new notes will be officially introduced under the theme "The Cedi, Our Future: Secure, Designed to Last." Despite the launch of the Heritage Series, existing cedi notes will remain in circulation as legal tender, meaning there is no urgency for the public to exchange or withdraw their current notes. The updated banknotes are designed with advanced security features to combat counterfeiting and support effective currency management. Additionally, their e nhanced durability is expected to reduce the frequency and cost associated with replacing damaged notes. Design elements of the Heritage Series are inspired by Ghanaian iconography, aiming to honor national heroes while celebrating the nation's cultural identity. The Bank of Ghana has also emphasized the importance of proper banknote handling to maintain the quality of the currency and support efficient management. The official launch of the Heritage Series is scheduled for November 3, 2026, at Bank Square in Accra. The BoG assures the public that there is no immediate need to replace existing notes, as both the new and old series will circulate together.
