Road Safety Emerges as Major Challenge for Ghana’s Transport Sector

Accra: Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, has highlighted road safety as the most pressing issue facing Ghana's transport sector, following a significant increase in road traffic crashes and fatalities nationwide. According to Ghana News Agency, road traffic fatalities in Ghana reached a staggering 2,954 in 2025, marking the highest level recorded in over two decades. Additionally, reported road crashes surged by 31.6 percent between 2021 and 2025. Mr. Nikpe emphasized that these statistics should not be viewed merely as numbers, but as indicators of deep societal impacts, particularly affecting families and communities through the loss of breadwinners and young individuals. 'Behind these figures are families, breadwinners, and young lives. This is a national emergency, and we must treat it as one,' Mr. Nikpe stated. He called for a collective and sustained effort from government agencies, transport operators, motorists, pedestrians, and other road users to address the alarming road safety situa tion. The goal is to reverse the current trend and ensure safer roads across Ghana. The Minister stressed that tackling road fatalities should be a central priority within the broader transformation of the transport sector. He pointed out that the benefits of improved roads and transport infrastructure cannot be fully realized if preventable road crashes continue to claim lives. Mr. Nikpe made these remarks at the opening of the 2026 Transport Sector Review Conference in Ho, which focused on the theme: 'Financing and Delivery of Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Services: A BIG PUSH for Sustainable Economic Transformation.'
