Accra: The final batch of 41 Ghanaians evacuated by the Government of Ghana from South Africa, following recent xenophobic attacks, arrived on Friday, September 4, 2026. This marks the conclusion of the government's evacuation exercise, as disclosed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a meeting with the evacuees at the Accra International Airport.
According to African Press Organization, the evacuation exercise commenced in May 2026 and has successfully brought nearly 1,900 Ghanaian citizens back home. The remains of two Ghanaians who were tragically attacked and killed were repatriated, and one returnee died upon arrival in Accra, making the total number of deaths related to the exercise three.
In addressing the final group of 41 returnees, the Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed his appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his steadfast commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians worldwide. He encouraged the returnees to remain hopeful and resilient, urging them to focus their efforts on contributing to building a better Ghana.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of prioritizing health, advising returnees to seek medical attention as needed while they work to rebuild their lives. He assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide a comprehensive account of all funds used during the evacuation process.
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa conveyed his gratitude to various allied agencies and private-sector partners whose support was instrumental in the successful execution of the evacuation exercise.
