Bangkok: The cause of death of British-Nigerian businessman Igho Ubiribo, also known as Tiny, has been disclosed months after his passing. Ubiribo, a close friend of Nigerian singer Davido, died after undergoing a procedure in Bangkok. According to Ghana Web, the 43-year-old received injections of 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at an unnamed clinic in March while staying with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, at a Marriott hotel in the city.
After the procedure, Ubiribo went for a massage, during which he began experiencing chest pain and lost consciousness twice. He was taken by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital, where he initially responded to questions. His wife informed the medical team about the injections, and his primary care doctor in London shared details of his medical history, which included a past joint operation, pre-diabetes, and gout.
Although Thai doctors recommended a CT scan, Ubiribo lost consciousness again before it could be conducted. Medical professionals determined he had a pulmonary blood clot blockage. Despite 100 minutes of CPR, Ubiribo did not survive. Inner West London Coroners' Court later revealed that a UK postmortem found material consistent with hyaluronic acid filler in his lungs, leading pathologist John du Parcq to conclude that the procedure caused the fatal blood clot.
Ubiribo's funeral took place in Kensington, where mourners, including Nigerian Afrobeat star Davido, gathered to pay their respects. Davido, a childhood friend, delivered a tribute describing the loss as "heavy" and surreal. The case has sparked considerable attention, with social media users reacting to the tragic incident.
Medical professionals have consistently warned against such procedures due to potential life-threatening risks, a caution underscored by Ubiribo's untimely death.
