Peduase lodge: The Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation has reaffirmed Government's commitment to deepening democratic decentralisation and strengthening Ghana's local governance system. The Committee emphasized that decentralisation is essential for promoting accountable governance, responsive public service delivery, and accelerated development at the local level.
According to Ghana News Agency, the reaffirmation was made during a high-level meeting of the IMCC held at Peduase Lodge, chaired by Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The meeting aimed to address strategic policy, institutional, legislative, financing, and implementation priorities critical for advancing Ghana's decentralisation agenda under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the significance of decentralisation for effective governance and fostering stronger relations between the State and its citizens. She noted that bringing decision-making and public services closer to citizens is crucial for improving governance and ensuring that development aligns with local needs.
The Vice President further stated that decentralisation should ultimately enhance citizens' welfare and protect the environment, with a strong emphasis on participation and inclusion within the governance process. She reiterated the Government's dedication to advancing devolution and strengthening citizen participation, emphasizing the urgency of transitioning from policy formulation to implementation.
