Accra: Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has expressed frustration over persistent claims that Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has incurred losses, saying the issue has now reached the point where 'Asafo songs' are being composed about the alleged losses. Speaking on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana, Pratt challenged those making the claims to produce evidence of the alleged loss.
According to Ghana Web, Pratt stated that the figures being described as GoldBod losses are instead the result of a difference between the Bank of Ghana's official exchange rate and the prevailing foreign exchange rate. He explained that the existence of two different exchange rates would naturally create a gap in the books and should not automatically be interpreted as mismanagement, recklessness, or theft.
Pratt further elaborated that he had examined GoldBod's financial statements after obtaining a copy and found no loss recorded by the institution. He highlighted that he had received the financial statements from a source named Moro, which confirmed the absence of any losses. Pratt questioned the continued references to 'GoldBod losses', particularly as the issue had now become the subject of songs.
The Managing Editor's remarks come amid growing public discourse and speculation surrounding the financial status of GoldBod, with the topic even inspiring traditional Asafo songs, a form of cultural expression in Ghana. Pratt's challenge to those alleging losses underscores the need for transparency and factual evidence in financial discussions affecting public institutions.
