Accra: The Centre for Environmental Sustainability Africa (CFES Africa), an independent think tank focused on environmental sustainability and responsible business governance, has pledged its support to Ghana's newly appointed Ministers of Environment, Science and Technology, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. The organization aims to assist in tackling the country's pressing environmental issues.
According to Ghana News Agency, CFES Africa has expressed its readiness to offer evidence-based research, technical expertise in environmental impact assessments, sustainability standards, and capacity building for regulatory agencies. The think tank aims to ensure effective community engagement and support for the country's environmental priorities. In a statement issued in Accra, CFES Africa extended congratulations to Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings on her appointment as the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and to Mr. Mahama Ayariga as the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings takes on her role amidst significant environmental challenges in Ghana, such as illegal mining, forest degradation, and water pollution, which affect millions of livelihoods. CFES Africa welcomed President John Dramani Mahama's emphasis on science-based environmental protection, effective regulation, consistent enforcement, and community involvement as strategies to address these challenges.
The organization highlighted the President's concerns about the destruction of forests and water bodies, which pose serious threats to national survival. It also pointed out the connection between environmental degradation and public health, citing that polluted rivers, contaminated soils, and unsafe air directly impact human wellbeing. CFES Africa noted that Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings' medical background could be beneficial in addressing the environmental mandate, emphasizing its dual environmental and humanitarian nature.
Regarding the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, CFES Africa noted the ministry's vital role in environmental governance. District assemblies are responsible for key tasks such as sanitation, waste management, land-use planning, and enforcement of by-laws. The chieftaincy institution also plays a crucial role as the custodian of stool lands, forests, and water bodies, underscoring that local actions are critical to the success of national environmental policies.
CFES Africa conveyed its wishes for wisdom and courage to both ministers in their new roles and expressed optimism for their successful tenures.
