Accra: Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has cautioned the media against spreading unverified information in the digital era, as it poses a serious threat to public trust, national cohesion, and Ghana's democracy. He emphasized the critical role of media in shaping public discourse and holding authorities accountable, while also warning against the dangers of misinformation.
According to Ghana Web, Shaibu Mahama, MP for Daboya/Mankarigu, delivered Bagbin's speech at a media engagement, highlighting the rapid spread of false information, which can reach thousands, and sometimes millions, within minutes. The Speaker expressed concerns over the challenges posed by advanced technology, especially artificial intelligence, which complicates the differentiation between fact and fabricated content.
Bagbin underscored the media's dual potential to either build trust and promote national unity or contribute to division and public distrust if not exercised responsibly. He called on media practitioners to uphold accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in their work, emphasizing that media freedom should be paired with responsibility.
Mahama further advocated for media organizations to strengthen their collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to enhance civic awareness and democratic principles. He urged the media to extend their role beyond mere political reporting to educating citizens on constitutional matters, civic duties, and the importance of peaceful public participation.
The call to action stressed the need for media to serve as a robust platform for fostering an informed and active citizenry, especially in an era where fake news and digitally altered content are prevalent.
