Accra: Ghanaian preacher Apostle Richard Kwame Owusu has caused a stir online following a comment he made about the spiritual significance of cocoyam. In a video making waves on X on August 24, 2026, the leader of Jelem Chapel International claimed it is a curse for someone to plant cocoyam in their home.
According to Ghana Web, the preacher asserted that planting cocoyam in the house can cause a man to become a womaniser. Owusu stated, “It is a curse to plant cocoyam in your house. If you plant cocoyam in your house, your husband will become a womaniser.” He further advised women to “wear sexy clothes for your husbands at home,” as he addressed Christian women.
Owusu’s statement, “If you want to challenge me, look through your window in the evening, and you will see that the cocoyam leaf is sparking fire,” has triggered significant reactions on social media, with many expressing varying opinions about his claims.
While some netizens have criticised the pastor and other Ghanaian preachers for allegedly spiritualising everything, others have described him as a fake pastor who is exploiting the beliefs of uninformed individuals.
