Accra: Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Divine Agorhom, has explained why he did not support Dr Bernard Okoe Boye in the party's recent regional chairman election, despite describing him as a close friend and 'darling boy'.
According to Ghana Web, Agorhom stated that his decision was not due to doubts about Dr Okoe Boye's capability to lead the party in the region. He explained on Eye Witness News on Citi FM, monitored by Ghana Web on August 19, 2027, that he had previously committed his support to another candidate, Alfred Boye, before Dr Okoe Boye entered the race, making it difficult to retract his commitment.
Agorhom highlighted his past collaboration with Dr Okoe Boye, noting his support for Okoe Boye's parliamentary ambitions and lobbying for his role as Deputy Health Minister in the previous administration. He expressed that despite his personal relationship with Dr Okoe Boye, the regional chairmanship contest required him to honor his prior commitments.
Agorhom admitted to voting for Dr Okoe Boye and subtly endorsing him to other party members, although he refrained from openly campaigning for him. He emphasized the importance of recognizing Dr Okoe Boye's strengths and popularity within the party while maintaining his commitment to Alfred Boye.
Despite the contest's outcome, Agorhom affirmed that his relationship with Dr Okoe Boye remained intact, as they had spoken post-election and continued to respect each other. He acknowledged that Dr Okoe Boye's victory as NPP Greater Accra regional chairman required the party members to unite and support the new leadership in preparation for the 2028 general election.
Agorhom urged Dr Okoe Boye to focus on uniting all factions within the region, emphasizing that strong internal support would be vital for the NPP's success in reclaiming parliamentary seats in Greater Accra in 2028.
