Tema: The Global Mercy, the world's largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship, has docked at the Port of Tema to begin a 10-month field service in collaboration with the Government of Ghana. This marks the ship's return to the country after its recent mission in Sierra Leone and a scheduled maintenance period. The initiative aims to provide free surgical care on board to the citizens of Ghana.
According to African Press Organization, the field service is a joint effort with the Government of Ghana, welcomed by President John Dramani Mahama. He emphasized the critical importance of health as a fundamental public good. Despite Ghana's strong healthcare system, many citizens still face obstacles to accessing timely and affordable surgical care. The National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP) launched in 2024 aims to address these challenges, ensuring essential services are part of Ghana's universal health coverage strategy.
The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, highlighted the importance of NSOAP in reducing maternal and child mortality and improving emergency care services. Mercy Ships has been a longstanding partner in this mission, combining free specialized surgery with education, mentoring, and workforce development.
This is the fifth field service by Mercy Ships in Ghana, focusing on various surgical procedures, including cleft lip and palate repair, tumor removal, and cataract surgery. Michael Nkeze, Mercy Ships Country Director for Ghana, emphasized the organization's commitment to investing in both immediate patient care and the long-term strengthening of surgical systems.
Since 1991, Mercy Ships has significantly contributed to Ghana's healthcare sector, performing thousands of surgeries and dental procedures, and training healthcare professionals. The ship is crewed by volunteers from over 70 countries, including Ghanaian volunteers who have been integral to its operations.
Among the dedicated volunteers is Hospital Chaplain Mama Clementine, who joined Mercy Ships in 1997. Her work embodies the spirit of service and compassion that defines the organization's mission. Over the next 10 months, international and Ghanaian volunteers will work together to deliver transformative healthcare services and strengthen the nation's surgical capabilities for the future.
