Accra: King Harald V of Norway has been admitted to hospital after undergoing a medical examination. The 89-year-old monarch, who has been receiving cortisone treatment in recent weeks for haemolytic anaemia, is experiencing fluid accumulation in his body that necessitates hospital care.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Norwegian Royal Court announced the king's hospital admission on Monday and confirmed that he is on a two-week sick leave. During this period, Crown Prince Haakon will assume the role of regent. King Harald's health has been a matter of concern for some time, as he was hospitalized in Tenerife in February due to an infection and had a pacemaker fitted in March 2024 after falling ill in Malaysia.
The Norwegian royal family has faced several health-related issues recently. Queen Sonja was admitted to the hospital in May for heart problems, while the king's sister, Princess Astrid, also struggles with heart issues. Additionally, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who suffers from chronic pulmonary fibrosis, underwent a lung transplant in June.
