Accra: Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has denied reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Awuku, a former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), addressed the rumors in a video shared on TikTok on August 16, 2026. The video showed him in Kumasi alongside popular NDC sympathiser Appiah Stadium. Awuku questioned the validity of the arrest reports, emphasizing that he was participating in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) regional elections in the Eastern Region on the day in question.
Awuku stated, "Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi," thereby dismissing the allegations of his detention.
The reports of Awuku's alleged arrest suggested that EOCO had detained him over alleged corruption and financial irregularities linked to his tenure at the NLA. These claims were said to be part of ongoing investigations into financial transactions and other dealings at the Authority. However, Awuku firmly refuted these allegations, using his presence in Kumasi on Sunday as evidence to counter the reports of him being taken into EOCO custody.
