Accra: Agona Nkwanta Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Western Region convened on Saturday to elect a new slate of regional executives. The election, held at Agona Nkwanta in the Ahanta West Constituency, was marked by a peaceful voting process, with delegates from all 17 constituencies in attendance. The event resulted in significant alterations in the regional leadership as the party gears up for the 2028 general elections.
According to Ghana Web, Ignatius Kwasi Africa secured the position of Western Regional Chairman with a decisive 265 votes, surpassing Abdul Ganiu, who garnered 102 votes, while one ballot was rejected. In the race for Secretary, Kwasi Bonzoh, a former Ellembelle District Chief Executive and a seasoned NPP parliamentary candidate, defeated the incumbent secretary, Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa, by obtaining 211 votes to Afrifa's 157.
The newly elected Communication Director, Emmanuel Issah Acquah, received 212 votes, outpacing the former Communication Director, Issah Fuseini, who collected 152 votes. Meanwhile, Augustina Nketsiah emerged victorious in the Women's Organizer category, polling 193 votes against incumbent Josephine Yaa Odoom's 173 votes.
The full results of the elections showcased a variety of new faces in key positions: Ignatius Asaah Mensah as Vice Chairman with 204 votes, Francis Abeiku Yankah as Second Vice Chairman with 193 votes, and Lawrence Kojo Appiah Takyi as Deputy Secretary with 157 votes. Other critical roles included Amoabeng Owusu Acheampong as Organizer with 181 votes, Osagyefo Atiah Kwaw as Youth Organizer with 197 votes, and Nana Adjoa Appiah as Treasurer with 262 votes. The NASARA Coordinator position was secured by Alhaji Adam Harun Ahmed with 190 votes.
The peaceful execution of the process was lauded by security agencies, party officials, and observers alike. Post-election, stakeholders emphasized the importance of the new leadership in fostering unity, reinforcing grassroots structures, and strategizing to enhance the party's presence in the Western Region. Currently, with the NDC holding 9 out of the 17 parliamentary seats, the new NPP executives are tasked with increasing their parliamentary representation in the forthcoming elections.
The successful Western Regional Congress at Agona Nkwanta is anticipated to invigorate the party as it prepares for future internal and national electoral challenges.
