Accra: New Patriotic Party (NPP) social media activist, Mohammed Buhari, commonly referred to as Gen Buhari, has shared a distressing account of his detention in a Jamestown cell, a suburb of Accra.
According to Ghana Web, Buhari detailed his ordeal in a post on X, describing the deplorable conditions he faced after voluntarily turning himself in to the National Security with his lawyer. He recounted the lack of basic amenities, stating that the facility had no running water throughout his detention period. Buhari revealed that he was unable to bathe until his release, relying on sachet water purchased by fellow inmates for personal hygiene.
Buhari also mentioned the challenging sanitary conditions, where detainees were forced to eat beside a toilet that couldn't be flushed due to the water shortage. Waste accumulated throughout the day, only being flushed at night with sachet water. He described the experience as hellish and expressed his inability to forgive the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for the treatment he endured, despite not committing any crime. Buhari promised to share a complete account of his experience.
The incident stems from the arrest of Buhari and fellow activist Godfred Ansu Damoah by state security, following their dissemination of a video allegedly showing President John Mahama requesting GHS150 million from the National Security Coordinator. Authorities, however, labeled the video as AI-manipulated. The court subsequently granted both activists bail of GHS30,000 each with two sureties, though reports suggested their prolonged custody even after meeting bail requirements.
