Accra: The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwasi Afreh Biney, has urged the Trust's subsidiaries to strive for financial independence and reduce their reliance on continual bailouts. This call for action was made during the inauguration of Trust Logistics Limited's (TLL) new fleet of trucks and official vehicles, which took place on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Afreh Biney emphasized that SSNIT is committed to supporting subsidiaries that exhibit strong leadership, innovation, and effective resource management. He highlighted the importance of subsidiaries taking control of their growth, stating, "What I'm seeing here today reflects the new thinking that I want these investment companies and subsidiaries to show."
Afreh Biney elaborated on SSNIT's strategy to encourage subsidiaries to become self-sufficient, advocating for a proactive approach to change the narrative surrounding their performance. He assured that SSNIT's support would be available to those who demonstrate effort and progress. "When we see that you are changing the story, then we need to step in and help," he remarked, while cautioning against continuous support for those who have not shown capability in managing resources efficiently.
He stressed that perpetual financial support to underperforming subsidiaries could weaken SSNIT's financial health and its ability to fulfill obligations to pensioners. Comparing it to parents endlessly supporting an adult child unable to become self-reliant, he warned, "If we continue bailing you out and you bleed us, you will negatively impact our assets and our management."
With over 2.1 million active members and more than 265,000 pensioners, SSNIT currently disburses over GHS600 million in pensions monthly. Afreh Biney noted that managing such a large pension scheme necessitates prudent investment management to safeguard the funds.
He praised TLL for exemplifying the innovation and initiative expected from SSNIT subsidiaries, particularly in tackling business challenges and seizing new opportunities. He encouraged subsidiaries to seek collaborative opportunities within the SSNIT investment ecosystem, which could lead to expanded business opportunities and bolster SSNIT's fixed-income investments.
Afreh Biney urged TLL's management and staff to sustain their momentum and translate new investments into tangible growth and improved performance. "We are very proud of you," he stated, urging the company to continue its progress through innovation, collaboration, and responsible management.
