Sunyani: The Sunyani Anglican Diocese has elected the Very Reverend Martin Apraku Amankwah as the new Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese. The role of the Coadjutor Bishop, according to the Church, involves collaborating closely with the diocesan bishop in managing the spiritual, pastoral, and administrative aspects of the diocese. Typically, the Coadjutor Bishop is expected to succeed the diocesan bishop.
According to Ghana News Agency, The Right Rev. Dr. Festus Yeboah Asuamah, the Anglican Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese, announced at a news conference in Sunyani that the Very Rev. Amankwah was elected during a special Synod of the diocese held on April 11, 2026. His appointment has been confirmed by the Episcopal Synod, as per the Provincial Constitution's provisions.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Asuamah highlighted the qualities of the Very Rev. Amankwah, noting his piety, sobriety, honesty, sound doctrine, and faithfulness to the discipline of the church. These attributes qualified him for the role of Coadjutor Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Sunyani. The Diocesan Bishop also delivered the 'Mandate of Consecration' signed by the Most Rev. Dr. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith, the Metropolitan Archbishop and Primate, underscoring Very Rev. Amankwah's ordination journey from deacon in 2007 to priest in 2008.
The mandate from the Metropolitan Archbishop directs the consecration of Very Rev. Amankwah to the office of Bishop in the Church of God. Rt. Rev. Dr. Asuamah expressed confidence in the newly elected bishop's ability to foster stronger relationships among the clergy, laity, parishes, institutions, and other church partners.
In response, Very Rev. Amankwah conveyed his gratitude to the clergy, laity, parishes, and the entire Anglican Church for their trust in his leadership. He committed to working diligently to promote the holistic growth of the diocese and Christendom at large.
