Koforidua: The caretaker of Hallelujah Hostel at Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has allegedly threatened students believed to have reported the facility to the Rent Control Department, warning them of consequences after authorities temporarily closed the hostel following an inspection.
According to Ghana Web, the incident came to light when an audio message began circulating on social media in which the caretaker expressed anger towards students suspected of alerting authorities about the hostel's conditions. In the message, the caretaker reportedly stated, "Whoever went to report us to the Rent Control, you've done yourself more damage than good. I am promising you, whatever disgrace you've gone to bring upon us, you'll pay for it for the rest of your life. No anointing will change it."
The caretaker further criticized students for reporting the hostel over issues related to rent charges and accommodation conditions, emphasizing that occupants also had a duty to maintain their rooms. She remarked, "If you are living in a room, who do you expect to clean it for you? Whoever went to report us, you will suffer for the rest of your life. We leave all of you to God."
The inspection by the Rent Control Department, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), took place on August 5, 2026. It resulted in the temporary closure of five hostels, including Hallelujah Hostel, due to concerns about accommodation conditions and compliance with regulatory requirements. The other affected hostels were Nhyira Hostel, Adehyie Hostel, Serwaa Heights Hostel, and Elite Hostel.
The authorities stated that the joint exercise aimed to ensure that student accommodation facilities meet approved standards and provide safe, decent, and habitable living conditions for students. The Rent Control Department and the Ghana Tourism Authority also noted that the inspection sought to address excessive rent charges, enforce licensing and regulatory requirements, and ensure hostel operators comply with established guidelines governing student accommodation.
