Accra: Former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to respond to a petition presented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during their recent "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration. This call was made following the large-scale protest held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Accra, aimed at highlighting concerns about governance and democratic accountability in Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, Osei-Asare emphasized the importance of formally communicating these concerns to the President, urging him to take necessary actions. She expressed the NPP's intention to ensure that the President is aware of the situation, suggesting that those around him might not be conveying the full truth.
"We are asking the President to look at the situation because things are not being done right. As citizens of this nation, we need to let him know, just in case he is not aware or just in case those around him are not telling him the truth," Osei-Asare stated.
The Atiwa East MP argued for decisive leadership from the President, stating that the opposition party's concerns require immediate attention. She insisted that President Mahama must intervene to restore order and address the issues presented in the petition.
"Clearly, things have gone haywire and he needs to put his foot down and do the right thing. That's all we are asking of him," she said.
Osei-Asare expressed confidence in President Mahama's potential response, framing it as a reflection of responsible leadership. She reinforced the expectation of a forthcoming response from the President, highlighting it as a crucial step.
"We are waiting for him to respond and that is what a responsible President should do. We know he will do it and we are waiting for his response," she added.
The demonstration witnessed participation from hundreds of NPP supporters and sympathisers, gathering to defend civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic accountability. The protest route extended from the Supreme Court to Jubilee House, where party leaders delivered the petition outlining the perceived threats to Ghana's democratic governance.
The event also saw support from allied groups, including the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), which joined the demonstration in solidarity with the NPP's cause.
