Kumasi: Thirteen-year-old Jeffery Adjei Boakye has successfully undergone a kidney transplant in India, thanks to a generous $40,000 sponsorship from businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama, just six days after his plight was highlighted by GHOne TV.
According to Ghana Web, the life-saving surgery was performed on July 24, 2026. Jeffery's mother, Jenet Koraman Kumi, reported that her son is responding positively to treatment and medication following the operation. Jeffery, a Grade Seven student at Zion Praise Educational Complex in the Ashanti Region, had been battling end-stage kidney disease and required urgent financial support for the transplant.
The media spotlight on Jeffery's condition came after it was featured by GHOne TV's Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Isaac Justice Bediako, on April 10, 2026, across EIB Network platforms. At the time, Jeffery was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where specialists determined that a kidney transplant was his best chance of survival. He had been undergoing haemodialysis three times a week to manage his condition while his family sought financial help.
Ibrahim Mahama, moved by the media report, stepped in with the full $40,000 needed to finance the transplant in India, just six days after the story aired. Medical personnel at KATH subsequently facilitated preparations for Jeffery's travel and surgery abroad.
After the successful operation, Kumi expressed profound gratitude to Mahama for his life-saving gesture. She also praised GHOne TV for bringing her son's condition to the public's attention, stating that the media coverage played a crucial role in securing the support that saved his life. Prior to the donation, Kumi had appealed to the public for assistance, explaining that Jeffery was born prematurely with congenital abnormalities affecting his urinary tract, which progressed into chronic kidney disease and eventually end-stage renal failure.
Although doctors caution that Jeffery remains vulnerable to infections due to his weakened immune system, they are optimistic that the successful transplant will significantly improve his health and long-term recovery.
