Accra: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has received police approval to carry out its planned demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The protest is in response to the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit and discharge Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), reversing her earlier conviction and a 10-year prison sentence handed down by the High Court.
According to Ghana Web, Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP, announced the protest's route after securing approval from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command. He stated that the demonstration would begin at 5 AM in front of the Supreme Court, proceeding to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and then to the Jubilee House. The party also plans to present a petition to Parliament through a designated representative.
Nana B explained that the protest aims to draw attention to perceived injustices and challenges to democratic principles in Ghana. He highlighted concerns over selective justice, judiciary interference, and repressive bail conditions affecting opposition members. He emphasized that the party views these issues as a threat to democracy, free speech, and overall democratic health in the country.
The National Organiser expressed the party's stance on the current state of democracy in Ghana, criticizing what they see as suppression of free speech and the criminalization of expression. He remarked that the current situation does not align with the promises made by President Mahama, indicating a decline in democratic practices under his leadership.
